Utrasound Guided Injections
Ultrasound can be a useful modality to assist in guiding injections for many musculoskeletal injuries. Ultrasound ensures greater accuracy of injections and can allow more specific treatment of many injuries.
All injection types can be performed using ultrasound.
Some injections, such as polidocanol sclerotherapy for tendon injury or tendinitis can only be performed with ultrasound in Doppler mode (can see increased blood flow in this mode).
Some typical examples of conditions that may benefit from injections performed using ultrasound include:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles tendinitis
- Trochanteric bursitis (hip)
- Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
- Golfer’ elbow (medial epicondylitis)
- Rotator cuff injury
- Shoulder tendon injury (tendon tear or tendinitis)
- Shoulder bursitis
- De Quervain’s tenosynovitis (wrist)
- Adductor tendon injury
- Muscle injury
- Osteitis pubis
Injections performed under ultrasound by a specialist Sports Physician have a Medicare rebate and the patient has only minimal out-of-pocket fees.
